Unforgettable Maasai Mara
Traversing the country from the glistening white sandy beaches at
the Coast to the picturesque wild plains of the Masai Mara remains
one of my most memorable moments in life. We continue this
series from last month where we had a four day trip at the coast
full of adventure, fun and a host of thrills and spills.
Day 5
Forty five minutes on board an Air-kenya flight from Mombasa International Airport to the capital city cast an immediate nostalgic spell on me. As I sink my teeth into the Dorman's muffins and sandwiches served on board,I feel upbeat reflecting on the moments at the coast while anxiously tapping my foot in anticipation for a wild ride at the Masai Mara.
We arrive safely at the Wilson Airport just in time to catch one of Air Kenya’s three daily flights to the Mara. Forty five minutes after take off I feel adrenalin take a slow toll on me, making me a tad conscious my newly found energy. My excitement betrays my cover, making it too apparent that it is my first time at the Maasai Mara. But its all good, I am about to be witness to one of the seven wonders of the world, the great wildebeest Migration.
The Air Kenya plane touches down at Ol Kiombo Airstrip and at hand to welcome us is our guide in a 4X4 Land Rover courtesy of Tipilikwani Camp. I realize that there is no taking chance with the rich taste of safari when I see that our guide driver is actually a Maasai completely donned in the Maasai Moran traditional regalia.
At the awe inspiring Tipilikwani Camp we are welcomed with drinks and a towel to cool off from the Mara heat. Tipilikwani Camp is set at the banks of River Talek and blends seamlessly with the scenic dotty patches of bushes and trees in the plains. The camp itself is exquisitely designed with a rich and warm African taste. Talk of five star treatment in the heart of the wild; the well-appointed tents are about twenty in number each equipped with luxurious amenities. 2 family tents each comprising of two adjoining tents; one tent has 1 King size bed and the other with 2 Queen Size twin beds. All bathrooms are equipped with stand alone bathtub; 4 tents with King Size double beds and 12 tents with Queen size twin beds. The lounge and dining areas are characterized by lively yet warm safari hues and soft intimate lighting designed to relax guests returning from an exciting game drive.
We sit down for a mouthwatering three course lunch after which nature beckons at us to connect for a late afternoon game drive. An unforgettable experience as we saw the 'Big 5' and some cheetahs on the prowl. And just as luck would have it, a thrilling chase and ultimate kill right before our eyes. After the drive we chill out for some cold beers at the lounge area as we feast our eyes on a herd of grazers and the breathtaking sunset.
At dinner we catch up with other guests on our day Game drive experiences while savoring a gourmet dinner fit for royalty. The meal is four course and is prepared with what can only be described as culinary genius.......
